We spent a couple of days in New York in December 2000.
Dec 28 - took the train into New York City, arriving at Grand Central Station. Stood in line for a Gray Line tour for a long time in very cold weather. The people in line ahead of us looked very unhappy, like refugees waiting for rescue. Lunch in Greenwich village, then we walked through Little Italy and Chinatown to see the Brooklyn bridge from a pier. We walked across Lower Manhattan via Wall Street for a view of the Statue of Liberty. Visited the base of the Empire State Building, and took in the famous view of the long, unmoving line to reach the top. Saw Times Square at night, which looked somewhat more impressive and less seedy than it had earlier in the daylight. It was cold enough to feel like a trek to the South Pole.
Dec 29 - saw the panorama from World Trade Center. The line was long, but moved quickly. Visited the Rockefeller Center, where Anne's grandfather once worked, and jostled our way along the busy sidewalks of 5th Avenue.
