We rented a small house/cottage in Rye, New Hampshire, for a week. It was a few minutes walk from the cottage to Jenness State Beach, which was a long, gently sloping sandy beach good for digging and paddling.
Friday, August 19: Delivered Laser the dog to Newark Valley and spent the night in Oneonta, NY.
Saturday: Arrived at the cottage about 4 pm. The first priority was to assemble a large Lego set.
Apparently, we were supposed to bring linens. Visited the scenic Walmart nearby. Dinner at the Beach Plum (whatever that is, it doesn't exactly sound edible).
Sunday: A couple of trips down to the nearby beach, and played a couple of Lego games.
Monday: William tested his new boogie board at the beach. Headed into nearby Portsmouth to look around, and stocked up with trashy novels.
Tuesday: Looked around the Seacoast Science Center at Odiorne Point State Park. It had an amazing blue lobster.
Wednesday: Rode the rails at the Seashore Trolley Museum, Kennebunkport, Maine. Readers familiar with the Crich Tramway Museum in Crich, UK, will understand what this was all about. One of the old guys even had a British accent, for the ultimate Crich-style experience.
Thursday: Looked around the Fort McClary State Park, Kittery Point, Maine, the remains of an old civil war fort. Headed up the coast to Long Beach (rated by William as "awesome") and to the Cape Neddick Lighthouse.
Friday: Sand excavations at the Wallis Sands State Park beach. Nice lunch at Dos Amigos Burritos in Portsmouth. Spent a long time at Jenness State Beach.
Saturday: Long drive to Newark Valley to retrieve Laser, with extensive repacking to fit everything in.
Stopped at the Ollie's Trolley Ice Cream Caboose in Groton, NY. It's a real red caboose converted into an ice cream stand.
