May 31 - Vacation to France begins. We set off for the airport maybe a little bit late, and traffic problems meant we arrived at the terminal building only 15 minutes before our flight leaves.
June 1 - arrived in Bordeaux, France. We wandered around the old town, and had dinner in a sunny square.
June 2 - walked up steep and narrow roads to the chateaux at Beynac, Dordogne. Found Martin's parents on a nearby camp site. Spent several hours looking for a hotel room, ending up on bunk beds at a seedy dive near Brive railroad station.
June 3 - visited Rocamadour, toured the Padirac cave, and arrived at a gite (old farmhouse) near St. Cirq. The garden was the stage for seemingly endless competitive crowing by patrolling roosters.
June 4 - Saw prehistoric rock scratchings in the St. Cirq cave. The old guide seemed from a different, earlier, simpler time, apart from the laser pointer.
June 5 - visited prehistory museum in Les Eyzies.
June 6 - visited Grand Roc cave, which had stalagtites growing horizontally, curling around, etc. Also saw cliff dwellings, once the home of Neanderthals, now inhabited by a curious race of motionless plastic people.
June 7 - walked around the old market town of Sarlat, and saw the Madeleine cliff village on the river Vezere.
June 8 - visited a chateaux. The guided tour wasn't exactly what I expected, featuring numerous topless photographs of the one-time lady owner.
June 9 - Returned from France vacation. Drove from La Bugue to Bordeaux, flew to Paris, Newark, and Detroit. We flew over Manchester on the way, but couldn't see anything because it was covered in low clouds.
