Feb 24, 2001 - Flew down to Charleston from Detroit on Wasabi Airlines, a NW affiliate. We had a hotel room on the beach on the Isle of Palms - doesn't that sound better than the frozen Michigan tundra?
Feb 25 - Encountered a 4 ft long snake lying across a nature trail. There were a few minutes of standoff, while we decided who was most alarmed. We moved slowly towards the snake, and it suddenly slithered off into the bushes at quite an impressive speed. If we'd known it could move that fast, we'd have turned back.
Saw an enclosure containing red wolves, which had a kennel like structure to hide from tourists in. We think we saw a wolf's nose. Spent the afternoon walking round an old fort, and strolling along a beach in the sunshine.
Feb 26 - Walked around Charleston's historic district, and took a harbor boat tour. We were too hot just wearing T-shirts. In a Michigan winter, a T-shirt is something worn under a thick long sleeved shirt, a thick sweater, and a thick coat.
Feb 27 - More walking around Charleston, which is one of the most interesting cities we've seen in a long time. Unfortunately, it soon was time to fly back to Detroit.
